HYPNOTHERAPY AS A TREATMENT FOR IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is now being recognized as more than just a mild nuisance, or a stress-related condition. IBS, though not life threatening, can be debilitating for some sufferers. Up to 20% of the US population is estimated to be affected by IBS and 70% of those are women. When you consider that compared to other diseases which are usually less than 5%, the number of sufferers is staggering. As early as 1989 the British medical journal Lancet reported that half of forty IBS subjects treated with hypnotherapy over a seven week period enjoyed improved health, and eleven of those became almost symptom- free. Dr. Peter Whorwell first introduced hypnosis at the University Hospital of South Manchester in 1984. Dr. Whorwell, a gastroenterologist, then presented his results of more than 20 years of research on IBS. He says hypnosis cannot only improve symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but can even alter the underlying physical problems that cause the symptoms. Whorell’s group have now found long term (18 months) follow up response rates on 50 patients with 95% success with classic cases, 43% with atypical cases, and 60% with cases exhibiting significant psychopathology. Patients over age 50 responded poorly (25% success), but patients below age 50 with classical symptoms were 100% successful. If you have gone thru life always on the lookout for the nearest bathroom, because you’re constantly bloated, experiencing cramps, suffer from diarrhea and/or constipation and have tried every conceivable treatment, perhaps it is time to give hypnotherapy a try. Hypnotherapy is a non-invasive, drug free treatment with a proven track record for this disease. The American Gastroenterological Association has accepted hypnotherapy as a treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome since 1996. As with any disorder with a medical ideology, I will request a medical referral from your physician. A combined treatment program of hypnotherapy and your physician’s recommended diet and medication will furnish the most desirable results. Your hypnotherapy sessions will touch on stress control, relaxation techniques, re-frame stressful situations that can trigger episodes, and allow you to be pro active and positive in gaining control back in your life. Hypnotherapy also has a proven track record for reduction in pain and discomfort symptoms. I have also found that a consistent symptom is insomnia. We work on getting a nice healthy sleep pattern back. Hypnotherapy does not cure disease, however, it does offer great relief from debilitating symptoms. You will find that when you have the feeling of being back in control of your life that it increases your confidence and self esteem also. This empowerment leads to a return to your normal life style which will be a return to social activities and a healthy exercise program. Quite a few single people have put off dating because of this disease and soon they find that they are able to have a more balanced life once again. Why not make this the year to discover your full potential and gain back control over your life. • Learn to reduce stress |
